Happy Birthday Sweetshop!

As you know by now, yesterday was a big day for me and JBB. And in addition to our anniversary, it was the Sweetshop's first birthday!

It's odd, but until I was looking at some old blog posts a few weeks ago, I had no recollection that the Sweetshop was born on our five-year anniversary. That may be because we completely forgot our anniversary last year. Well, that's not exactly true; we remembered it a few weeks before and a few days after, but on the actual day, neither of us noticed. Ah, romance!

Anyway, for the SS's birthday, I made her (yes, of course the Sweetshop is a girl!) a cake in her favorite colors.

The bottom tier is Yummiest Yellow Cake with buttercream frosting covered with chocolate fondant and the top tier is Butter Chocolate Cake with buttercream covered in almond fondant.

Happy Anniversary to ME! (oh, and JBB, too)

JBB and I met at a coffee shop called the Atlas Cafe. I was wearing black from head to toe- my San Francisco uniform- and he was wearing this shirt. Classy first date attire, no? But, for whatever reason, I didn't turn around and walk out.

Six years, one cat, and two kids later here we are. And here's what we're having for dessert:

Nothing says 'I'm glad I didn't judge you based on your adolescent wardrobe' like mini heart-shaped raspberry-pear pies.

Happy Birthday... Ummm...

OK, I don't know whose birthday it is, but someone out there is turning 40!

These cakepops were won at an auction held by A-Train's school. The winner asked me to make them for her friend who is turning 40. The color green was suggested and the design was pretty much left up to me. Once I'd confirmed that the birthday girl wasn't depressed about the big 4-0, I decided to feature it prominently.

Happy Birthday Ivan!

Ivan will be celebrating his 3rd birthday next week, and like lots of boys his age, he has a thing for pirates.

Arrr!

It just so happens that Ivan's good friend Zach is allergic to eggs, so this is an egg-free chocolate cake with chocolate buttercream filling and vanilla buttercream frosting. The pirate is made of fondant.

Happy Birthday Kaylee!

Last April Emily celebrated her first birthday with cupcakes from the Sweetshop. And in November her mom, Kirsten, had a Sweetshop cake at her baby shower celebrating the impending arrival of baby brother Alex.

And today Emily and Alex's older sister Kaylee shared a Sweetshop cake with all of her friends at her fourth birthday party. I incorporated two of Kaylee's favorite things into the design of the cake: figure skating and the color pink!

This is a Yellow and Chocolate Checkerboard cake filled with Chocolately Chocolate Buttercream and covered in Almond Buttercream. Kaylee's skating likeness is made of vanilla and chocolate fondant.
