Sweet Southern Girl

I was born and raised here in North Carolina. In my early 20s I moved to San Diego and a couple of years later to San Francisco. While living in California people would always ask me where I was from (because no one is from California). And when I would give my standard answer of "I grew up down south in North Carolina" a debate would ensue. The non-southerner would insist that North Carolina is not part of the south. So once I'd established that they weren't thinking of North Dakota I would have to insist that North Carolina, despite its name, is, in fact, a southern state. It's below the Mason Dixon Line-- as are its neighbors to the north Virginia and Maryland-- it was on the Confederate side in the War of Northern Aggression, and most importantly, we North Carolinians consider ourselves to be Southerners, and we're not going to let anyone tell us any different.

The reason I'm telling you all of this is to establish my credibility as someone who knows her southern delicacies, not the least of which is a Moon Pie accompanied by an RC Cola. Seriously, there's even a festival to honor the pairing. So I've created my own homage to the treat, A Moon Pie and RC Cola cupcake!

This is a Devil's Food cake (I've got a thing for Devil's Food) with Moon Pie and RC Cola mixed right in. The frosting is a Chocolate Marshmallow Butter Cream with a bit of RC Cola.

Happy Birthday Emily!

The Divine Miss Em had her first birthday party this weekend. Her mom, Kirsten, asked me to create something girly in a pink and green palette to match Emily's favorite blankets. I have boys, so I relish the chance to get to make something girly! To get into the spirit of the pink and green theme, I put on my favorite Izod polo and slipped into my Member's Only jacket.

And here is what Emily got for her very first birthday.

Pink and green butterfly and polka dot cupcakes.

This one is my favorite.

And of course there were coordinating cake pops. There are always cake pops.

It seems as if the guest of honor was pleased!

Peanut Butter S'mores Cupcakes

I have a weakness. Well, actually, I have lots of them. But one of the biggies is the combination of peanut butter and chocolate. I don't know who first put those two leaders in the field of deliciousness together, but if I find him, I'm going to give him one of these cupcakes.

This is a Devil's Food cake with peanut butter chips, a layer of peanut butter on top, and a yummy marshmallow buttercream frosting topped with graham cracker crumbs. S'mores alone are delicious, but s'mores with peanut butter- divine!

Easter Cupcakes

The A-train's preschool class had its Easter celebration yesterday. As has come to be expected, I volunteered to bring in the snack. After countless hours spent trying to decide on a snack that would wow a group of 2 and 3 year olds I remembered that kids will eat anything covered in sugar. And that's how these bunny and ducky cupcakes were born.

The bunnies were pretty cute.

But then the ducky came along and stole my heart.

And the two of them side by side are just adorable.

These guys looked so yummy I wasn't sure that they were going to make it to school! But I exercised some restraint for the sake of the kids.

I think the duckies would also be great for a first birthday party. And the bunnies would be a hit at a party with a magic theme.
